DishDrift is a community cookbook for expats and travelers. It helps you find the local ingredient swaps that make home recipes work in a foreign kitchen.

## The founding story

DishDrift started in a small kitchen in Germany. Chi had moved abroad to study and, soon after arriving, just wanted to cook a dish from home following a familiar recipe. The recipe was simple, but the ingredients often weren't where you'd expect: some weren't sold nearby at all, and some sat right on the shelf under unfamiliar local names and packaging, so everything needed looking up. Chi's first trip to the local supermarket took two hours.

Recipe apps were no help: they assume you live where the recipe was written, and none could say what to use instead when the real thing wasn't there. The answers were out there, scattered across student chat groups and social platforms, but they surfaced and disappeared just as fast, and digging for them took hours.

That's the gap DishDrift fills: a community cookbook for people cooking far from home. The most valuable thing here is the line a fellow expat, already living where you live now, leaves under a recipe from their own experience: "can't find this in Germany? use this instead."

## Key features

- **Local Swap**: a note on an ingredient telling you what to buy instead where you live (e.g. which German supermarket product replaces Taiwanese rice wine).
- **Swap Board**: a community Q&A board for ingredient questions: "I can't find X in country Y, what works?"
- **Adapt**: make your own version of any recipe for where you live, with a visible link back to the original author, so you can see how a dish travels and changes.
- **I made this**: cooks post a photo or note after cooking a recipe; the author gets notified, and others see proof the recipe works abroad.
